History is filled with accounts of the rise of great nations and rulers. While each one seemed invincible and gave the impression they would last forever, one by one they have fallen and disappeared. Only God’s Kingdom and the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ remain truly permanent and indestructible. In the New Testament Church, Christ has instituted the office of Elder to lead and care for His Church. This office of Elder is an extremely high calling. This is because the elders must be devoted to what matters most in life and that which lasts forever. They pour the investment of their lives into the kingdom of Christ, the Word of God, and the souls of people. In this lecture series, we will be considering together the Biblical foundations for and qualifications and duties of the office of Elder in the Church of Christ.
The church of the Lord Jesus Christ in this world functions as a light on a hill in a dark world, but that light can go out. In his letters to the churches in Asia, in the book of Revelation, Christ threatens to remove their light unless they hold to and protect right doctrine. In this lecture, we learn that one of the functions of Ruling Elders in the church is to hold to, protect, and teach right doctrine in the church.
