Pastoral Theology

The work of the ministry is a high and solemn calling. It is a calling to preach the Word, to shepherd the flock, and to care for souls. In this series on Pastoral Theology, Rev. Harry Woods considers the practical concerns that confront both those entering the ministry, and those long engaged in its labors. Pastoral ministry is marked by the Word, diligence in preaching, watchfulness over one’s own self, care for the flock, and faithfulness in administering the sacraments, all carried out with endurance amid the struggles and discouragements that often arise. There are burdens to bear, distractions to overcome, and weaknesses to confront. Yet, the pastor’s strength and comfort come from the Chief Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, under whom he serves. Christ supplies the grace, compassion, and strength required. It is our prayer that this series will be both instructive and edifying for you.

In this first of two parts, we investigate what the call to the ministry is and what it is not. Rev. Woods exposes some of the unbiblical and misguided teachings on the subject. Then he helps us to examine how it is that God calls a man to the ministry, and how we can ascertain that call.

Rev Harry Woods recently retired as minister of Kilmorack & Strathglass Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) in Beauly, Scotland, after having served as a minister of the Gospel since 1982. He was the editor of the monthly denominational youth magazine, The Explorer, for eleven years and taught Apologetics and Pastoral Theology at the Free Church (Continuing) Seminary in Inverness for eighteen years. He is married to Mairi, and has three adult children and three grandchildren.
